Mary O' Brien

I am an experienced counsellor who works with couples and individuals.

I embody a unique blend of formal training, professional and life experience.

  • Since training as a counsellor, I have worked with couples, individuals, families and children in a range of settings, including Relationships Australia, Wimmera Uniting Care, Wimmera CASA and Bethany Community Support.

I now work in private practice.

I have previously worked in the areas of education, youth welfare, health and personal development, relationship education, meditation and mindfulness.

My maturity and wide range of experiences enable me to bring empathy, openness and understanding to my work. This helps clients to quickly feel at ease in the counselling setting. I provide a respectful, confidential and non-judgmental environment in which clients can explore the issues that concern them.

Services

I will help you gain greater insight into the situation you’re facing and explore ways of moving forward.

Couples

understanding / engaging / connecting / enhancing

couple therapy

I help couples to identify the issues that are causing them distress, and explore ways to manage the challenges more effectively.

The counselling process enables couples to better understand the dynamics of their relationship and the negative cycles that may be undermining it.

I help couples to explore sensitive issues; to hear each other in new ways; to gain greater insight into themselves and each other; to deepen connectedness and enhance intimacy; to gain skills and strategies to move their relationship forward.

Many couples simply want to stop arguing and revive the love that brought them together.

Couples don’t have to be in a state of crisis to come to counselling. Relationship ‘tune-ups’ every two or three years can keep a relationship alive and couples attuned to each other.

I provide a neutral, professional space where you can be heard with respect and openness as you explore and reflect on the issues that concern you.

Individuals

relationships / life stresses / transitions / ageing and illness

relationships

Everyone encounters difficulties and challenges in their lives.

If problems persist, counselling can provide a forum to clarify the issues and explore options

Issues may include relationships, grief and loss, sickness and life-threatening diseases, anxiety, past trauma, or life transitions such as parenting, retirement and ageing.

I recognise the courage and honesty required to discuss sensitive issues, and provide a safe, supportive space for you to do this.

I offer short-term and long-term counselling, according to your needs.

Pre-Marriage

expectations / strengths / challenges / relationship skills

marriage

The Prepare-Enrich marriage preparation program is designed for couples who are planning to marry or make a long-term commitment to each other.

Everyone enters a relationship and marriage with high hopes. But sometimes these hopes are dashed, with painful consequences for the individuals and their children.

The Prepare-Enrich program will help you to learn more about each other, prepare for the challenges of a life together and build on your relationship skills.

You will identify your strengths and potential areas where you might grow as a couple.
